Emeline Murrey was a lead actress in our spring play Little Women. She played the rambunctious character “Jo.” I hope you were able to attend one of the performances. I asked Emeline to reflect a bit on the experience. Here are her thoughts.
What did you enjoy most about performing in the play Little Women?
The aspect I enjoyed the most in rehearsing and performing Little Women was growing closer to the actors and my sisters as friends, and even as characters. It was amazing to see how much I learned about them through their roles. It was beautiful seeing them grow as little women in the play and outside of it.
What would you like for those who saw the play to take away from the experience from the story?
I would like the audience to take away the importance of “the family.” How much Mother and Father play a role in the household being complete. One of Jo’s lines, “She’s been gone nearly three months now, but it still feels as though half the house is missing,” highlights this emptiness, and in our world today where the family has been distorted, it is even more important to protect the unity of Family.
How did the experience either challenge you spiritually, and how did your faith help you work through the challenges?
My faith played a big role in the play. Preparing for it through prayer, and taking this role as an opportunity to give to the community helped relieve the stress of acting. I know that I could not have accomplished anything like this without the help of God, and the other actors and actresses felt the same, and through that understanding we were able to present to the community Little Women.

¿Qué quisieras que se llevaran consigo aquellos que vieron la obra? ¿Y sobre la historia?
Quisiera que la audiencia se llevara consigo la importancia de “la familia”. Cómo la Madre y el Padre juegan un rol para que el hogar esté completo. Una de las líneas de Jo: “Ella lleva ya casi tres meses fuera, pero todavía parece como si faltara la mitad de la casa”, resalta este vacío, y en nuestro mundo hoy, donde la familia ha sido distorsionada, es incluso más importante proteger la unidad de la Familia.
¿Cómo fue esta experiencia un desafío espiritual, y cómo te permitió tu fe trabajar a través de esos desafíos?
Mi fe jugó un rol muy grande en la obra. Prepararme para ella con oración, y tomar este papel como una oportunidad para llevar algo a la comunidad me ayudó a llevar el estrés de la actuación. Sé que no podría haber realizado nada como esto sin la ayuda de Dios, y sin la de otros actores y actrices que sentían lo mismo, y fue a través de ese entendimiento que fuimos capaces de presentar a la comunidad Mujercitas.
