I have been mesmerized by this photo of the skull of my confirmation saint, Thomas Aquinas, since it was first published a few months ago. He never imagined that the skull housing his powerful brain would be riding shotgun to a priest while going on world tour!
Speaking of powerful brains, here is a question for you: when teachers educate your child’s mind, are they forming your child’s brain or his soul?
Truly, the answer is both. But the primary thing educators change is your child’s soul. The brain also changes, but this is under the influence of the soul, not vice versa.
Let me illustrate it this way. When you die, do you continue to have thoughts? Do you continue to know things? Does your mind continue to work?
Of course! We certainly learn from Scripture and tradition that the souls in hell, purgatory and heaven all continue to have minds that work. Is it their brains doing this work? No – their brains have dehydrated and turned to dust in the grave (though they will one day be resurrected and reunited to their souls).
It is the soul that does the work of thinking, learning, knowing, and understanding. It is mediated through and works in tandem with the brain, in the way that our soul uses our hands and our feet to do good deeds, but the soul leads the work.
Now, what does this have to do with Canongate? It has everything to do with Canongate because now you know that a high school education is not primarily about your child’s brain. It is about his or her soul. I don’t say that lightly. I feel the weight of what I am saying. We at Canongate are entrusted with assisting parents and the Church in the formation of eternal souls, even when it comes to teaching History and Physics. No wonder Saint James said “let not many of you become teachers, for as such we shall incur a stricter judgment” (James 3:1). Please pray for those of us who accept this calling.
¿Poder cerebral o poder espiritual?
Me he quedado fascinado por esta fotografía del cráneo del santo de mi confirmación, Tomás de Aquino, desde que fue publicada hace algunos meses. ¡Seguro que el santo jamás imaginó que el cráneo que albergó su poderoso cerebro estaría de copiloto con un sacerdote mientras hacía una gira mundial!
Hablando de cerebros poderosos, aquí hay una pregunta para ti: cuando los maestros educan la mente de tu hijo, ¿están formando el cerebro o el alma de tu hijo?
Realmente, la respuesta es que las dos cosas. Pero el objeto primario que los educadores están cambiando es el alma de tu hijo. El cerebro también cambia, pero es bajo la influencia del alma y no al revés.
Déjame ilustrarlo de este modo. Cuando mueres, ¿continúas teniendo tus pensamientos? ¿Continúas conociendo cosas? ¿Tu mente sigue trabajando?
¡Por supuesto! Ciertamente aprendemos de las Sagradas Escrituras y la Tradición que las almas en el infierno, purgatorio y en el cielo tienen mentes que operan. ¿Son sus cerebros quienes operan? No, sus cerebros se han deshidratado y convertido en polvo dentro de la tumba (aunque algún día serán resucitados y reunidos a sus almas).
Es el alma la que hace el trabajo de pensar, aprender, conocer y entender. Este proceso está mediado y trabaja conjuntamente con el cerebro, en el sentido de que el alma emplea nuestras manos y nuestros pies para realizar buenas obras, pero es siempre el alma quien dirige el trabajo.
Ahora, ¿qué tiene que ver esto con lo que hacemos en Canongate? Tiene todo que ver con lo que hacemos en Canongate porque ahora ya sabes que una educación secundaria no se ocupa primariamente del cerebro de tu hijo, sino de su alma. No digo eso a la ligera. Puedo sentir el peso de lo que estoy afirmando. En Canongate sabemos que los padres y la Iglesia nos han confiado en la formación de almas eternas, aún cuando el objeto sea enseñar historia o física. No hay duda de por qué el apóstol Santiago decía: “que no haya muchos entre ustedes que pretendan ser maestros, sabiendo que los que enseñamos seremos juzgados más severamente” (St 3, 1). Por favor, recen por los que hemos aceptado esta vocación.
